Qimonda AG, a major area employer formerly known as Infineon, will lay off 1,200 workers at its manufacturing plant in Sandston near Richmond International Airport, NBC12 news is reporting.

The cuts are part of a total of 3,000 jobs that will be lost. The Sandston workers will be offered severance package as the German-based firm shuts down a division by January.

Qimonda was spun off from Infineon in 2006 and is a major supplier of 300 mm. chips.
