Polling is Back!

Friday, Jan. 18, 2008 at 3:30 p.m.
We're excited to let you know that a poll question has been added to Richmond.com. Directly under the "Local Updates" on the right side of the homepage you'll now see "Today's Poll." The poll question will rotate throughout the week, so be sure to check back often for the latest.

The current poll is on the Richmond Braves. How many games do you plan to attend this season?

Movie Mania

Tuesday, Dec. 18 at noon
A question below addressed the format of movie summaries. The movie channel can be found by clicking here, where movie listings can be found in alphabetical order. When you click on a movie listing, you'll get a list of where the movie is playing in the Richmond area, times that the movie will be shown and often an option to buy tickets for the movie. Many of the movies also include a cast listing, the director, the rating, the producer … the list goes on and on.

You also have the option of doing a search for a movie or movie theater or by rating. That's a lot of ways to find out information about a movie.

As far as our reviews are concerned, we have two writers – Casey Menninger and Josh Katz – who alternate weeks. I like having two reviewers – it gives a different voice each week and, quite honestly, you never know what they're going to say.

With the movie reviews and the information available on the movies channel, I hope you can make a wise choice of what movie you want to see. If you don't what like you see based on one our reviews, or in fact you think the opposite of what a reviewer said, come back and give us a piece of your mind.

If you have comments about the new-look Richmond.com, leave them below. Also, be on the lookout Thursday for the next installment of Did You Know, a weekly feature giving you a closer look at things you might not know about Richmond.com.

The story is chopped off!

Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2007

As you probably have noticed on the new-look Richmond.com, not every story fits on one page. Have no fear! The story is not chopped off or incomplete. Our longer stories are actually on two pages. At the bottom of every story, you'll see either "Page 1 of 1" or "Page 1 of 2" in between two arrows. If it says "Page 1 of 2," click the right arrow to continue reading the story.

The same idea works for stories at the top of most of the pages on Richmond.com. On the homepage, you'll see a featured story. Underneath that story it usually says "1 of 2" or "1 of 3." Click on the arrow to the right of the word "next" to see more stories. To read the featured stories, simply click on the headline.

Stay tuned for the "Did You Know?" column tomorrow that will discuss the comments section at the end of stories even more, plus we'll give you a few more highlights of things on Richmond.com that you might not know about.

Meanwhile, if you have comments or questions about our site, please leave them in the comments section below.

Did You Know?

Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007

Did you know that we debuted a new column today -- "Did You Know?" For all you text messengers out there -- DYK? This column is a new feature that will appear weekly on Richmond.com to highlight things on the site. Click here to check out this week's column. This week, and most likely in the next couple of weeks, the column highlights some of the changes on the new-look Richmond.com.

We have had a few comments out the text being hard to read. At the top of the page, toward the right, there is a text size adjuster. If you click on the middle A, the text size will increase. Click on the A to the right and it'll get even bigger.

I had a question from a reader about submitting comments. At the bottom of each story there is a comments section. To leave a comment, all that is required is a name, your comment and the answer to 2+2. The email address field is not required. Once you click "Add Comment" it appears nothing happens ... but it does. We get your comments (unless you incorrectly answered 2+2 and then approve it for publication. We're checking the comments regularly, so there shouldn't be a large gap of time between when you leave your comment and when it actually appears (unless it's late at night or during the weekend or while we're in a staff meeting).

We appreciate all your comments and emails this week. Keep 'em coming!

Change is scary

Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007

Everyone reacts to change in different ways. When visiting the new-look Richmond.com, I am sure that it's a shock to your system to see the changes. We appreciate all the comments you've left so far, and we hope they keep coming in. This means all comments -- positive and negative.

In case you missed it today, this week's Communication at Work column by Robert J. Holland discusses the new design of Richmond.com and how businesses go through Web site changes. It's certainly not an easy task. Much of the design was done before I even started here, but I know that it's been a long thought-out process from everyone here.

If you have any comments, leave them below. Also, be on the lookout this Thursday for our new "Did You Know?" column, which will discuss more about Richmond.com.

We'd love to hear your thoughts

Monday, Dec. 3, 2007

The staff at Richmond.com would like to welcome you to the new-look Richmond.com. While a lot has changed with the look of the site, so much has remained the same. You'll still be able to find our calendar, the latest in arts and entertainment, places to eat using the Local Directory and much more. The channels to the left of the page have been reorganized into "Top Stories," "Out & About," "Lifestyles," and "Find It!" sections. There you'll find everything that has always been a part of Richmond.com.

By using the RBlog, we'd like to know what you think of the site while it still has that new car smell. Take it for a test drive for a few days and come back with your questions, comments and suggestions. We'll be using this blog to keep you up to date on changes at Richmond.com. The redesigned site is only the beginning of new things to come your way.

Later this week, a new column called "Did You Know" will debut. That column will initially help guide you through the new-look Richmond.com. There are several new features of the site that we'll be highlighting. For example, look up at the search function near the top of the page. See the A's next to "Find It"? There you can increase the font size. Each week "Did You Know" will feature three things you may not know about Richmond.com. Your feedback on the column, and on this blog, is appreciated.

So if you have something you'd like to say about the redesigned site, send me an email at david.hylton@corp.richmond.com and then look for a response here on RBlog. Or, as you may see, leave a comment below.

The site looks great but I agree with many of the complaints regarding the real estate section. I frequently used the search by school option and now have a very difficult time searching for homes on your site. Please bring back the advanced search options!!!

I really dont' like the new EVENT section. What happened to being able to click on a date to get events? If use the search, you lose the categories and have to stroll through a really long list.

Sorry, not pleased with your changes. Why should I have to "adjust" the font to be able to read a page in the first place? Get real. The real estate section used to be the very best in town -we always referred our out-of-town job applicants to it. Have stopped doing that! Overall impression, too busy, too busy, too busy on the eye. I LIKED reading a complete article on one page. This looks like you are going after readers with the attention span of gnats. You guys can do better! P.S. Enlarging the font doesn't affect the column running down the lefthand side, which contains all your links - still impossibly tiny. All-in-all, this new look comes across as change for the sake of change, rather than meeting your readers' needs.

I agree with Angella & Mike. I'm in Michigan and my husband is in Richmond. Before, I could email him listings to go look at, now I have to go to another web site. Please bring back the email & advanced search features.

The new look is great with one exception--the font color. It really is a little difficult to read. Can you try a slightly darker color?

To Ben: This is a bug that we are currently working on. In the meantime, if you click the headline of the story (not the photo), it will take you to the story. Thanks!

The box at the top with the main stories of the day, every time I try to click on a story that isn't the first story, it goes to the first story. Please fix. Today I tried to click on the east Midlothian story and every time I would get the delux story. This has happened a lot since you have changed the site. Please fix.

Please bring back the old real estate advanced search features. The school information is key in this process

Your original format for movie summaries was much better. Your "reviews" don't tell us much and seem less helpful. On the whole the movies now available to the public are pretty poor, and we need some factual guidance to keep from wasting money and walking out!

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

Real Estate section to find homes is pretty bad now; it was excellent before. Was able to look up by school names, etc. which was real handy. Now got to move to some other site...

Jean - Reading a lot of black text on a white background online has been known to cause eye strain. Richmond.com is content driven, period.
AG - This website is designed for the current standard resolution of 1024 x 768 and not 800x600

Perfect, Editorial Staff! You've solved my eyesight problem. Here's to triple A!!!!!

PS: Now that the problem is solved, the whole site is much better than the old one.

Thanks.

Jean, how does one make the faint blue/grey font larger? It really is an effort to read.

Glad you agree about the tiny print...wish others would. Maybe they'd listen and correct it.

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

I like your redesign! I like your redesign!

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

I know it's difficult to change the look of a Web site. I have a couple of questions. Why such a SMALL FONT? And why use GRAY instead of BLACK for that small font? Folks coming to your site want to read on the screen, so using a SMALL GRAY type makes it difficult to read. I was able to make it slightly larger, but it's still gray. Thanks!

After reading through comments already, the Technology Team at Richmond.com has already started introducing new updates, including bringing back school information to the real estate channel.

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

to AG: I haven't seen anything on this site about scrolling left and right to see everything. Maybe you need to upgrade your monitor. Anyway, I like the site. Change is difficult, but everyone will eventually come around.

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

I personally don't like having to scroll up and down AND left to right to see everything. It looks a bit more confusing over all on the main page.

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

Was it really necessary to reduce type size? It's very hard on old eyes. Guess I'll have to go elsewhere for news.

It's pretty, though!

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

I was so excited when I saw the site had been changed! The new design is much lighter, visually. The body text appears as a dark gray, which is hard on the eyes to actually read. (Maybe it's my Mac. It may look darker for Windows users.) My favorite part of your site has always been the restaurant reviews and dining-related columns. I'm disappointed that you didn't make any major changes in that area's content. I wish you would provide more search criteria in your restaurant listings. I hop back and forth between richmond.com and inrich.com. Neither seem to offer exactly what I need/want as well as washingtonpost.com does.

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

It is sad that some people can not move on to bigger and better things. Although there are still some needed tweaks, all and all the organization and flow of the Web site was needed. Things to consider: It loads faster, Wider for more information on your screen therefore less scrolling and its easier on the eyes.
I have only lived in Richmond for 3 years and have noticed that technically, this region is about 2-3 years [behind.] Richmond.com is making the first move, Congrats!

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

I think it looks great. It will take a bit of getting used to, but overall, I think it is great!

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

Agree with Angella & Mike. The Real Estate section needs some additional tweaking. Was more informative and easier to navigate before. Really miss the ability to quick-view pictures without leaving the main listing and choosing the number of homes listed per page. Hope you can bring some of these back.

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

I'm very much arichmondfan too but I gotta say this looks like a step back... or at the most a lateral step in terms of content and design. Lacks vibrancy and doesn't really capture what Richmond truly is. Lackluster and chintzy... Does anyone know what good web design means there at Richmond.com? I've been wondering that for a while... Try investing a good web design firm that will help you take your portal to the next level. This design still looks "homemade," like those old, free Geocities sites.

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

Keep up the good work guys and gals!! I am so excited about the launch and I think that the redesign offers a fresh site for our users =)

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

I totally agree with the first contributor. I directed someone to Richmond.com today to look at real estate but I'm not sure they're going to be able to find their way now :(

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

I like the new movie section where I can read multiple reviews by your talented writers.

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

Richmond.com looks so much better! There was too much stuff on it before, now it looks so much cleaner.
I would like to see more restaurant and humor stuff!

Richmond.com Article Feedback - Leave your comment today!

I like it. It'll take some getting used to, but looks good.

We will be relocating to the Richmond area next year and were finding the Real Estate section really useful - before the update. Now, it is very hard to navigat as when you go from the listing details back to the search results, it takes you back to the first page. Also, all of the school information has been dropped, making it very hard if that is what your major focus is.
